July 2011 – The Disabled Access Friendly Campaign

Dear Teacher,

The Disabled Access Friendly campaign produces material for teaching and skills building as well as examination practice, while raising awareness about issues affecting people with mobility problems. Based in Greece and supported by author Luke Prodromou, it invites contributions from teachers throughout the world. You can read a letter from Luke here.

This month’s first addition to the Downloadable Worksheets section of the Teachers’ Area of www.tuneintoenglish.com was prepared for the campaign – the moving Kentucky Avenue details Tom Waits’ childhood memories of a friend who suffered from polio.

With the summer here, many of you will be on the move. The second worksheet is Wherever You Will Go by The Calling, submitted by Anna Napoli from Trieste.

The third addition is Ricky Martin’s The Best Thing About Me Is You, also recorded with Joss Stone, who has recently been in the news – see here. Sent in by Caterina Ziliani, now based in Houston, Texas, this song is my tribute to the users of Tune Into English!

Two new features have been added to the site – the first is a Donate button. Tune Into English is free and always be. However, as you can imagine, it takes a lot to maintain this – you can read more about how to show your appreciation here.

The second is a magazine clearout! There is a list of available back issues of the UK’s premier music magazines (Q, Mojo and Uncut) here – ideal for reading about your favourite artists over the summer and beyond!

Tune Into English has just finalised a collaboration with the Brazilian edition of Speak Up, and users in that country will be able to access an exclusive version of www.tuneintoenglish.com. Ola, Brasil!

Finally, with the season’s high temperatures, the Tune Into English T-shirt is the ideal addition to your wardrobe! Made of high quality material and featuring the Tune logo, this is available here.

The Tune Into English newsletter will return in September, but in the meantime check out the facebook page for updates. Have a great Summer – you deserve it!

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
