January 2013 – Happy New Year!

Dear Teacher,

I hope you had a relaxing festive season and that twenty thirteen has started well – HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Tune Into English Roadshow is about to recommence its tour – I look forward to meeting you and your students in 2013. You can read about my December visits to Teglio (SO) and Arzignano (VI) in the local newspapers on the Press page of www.tuneintoenglish.com and viewers in Puglia may have seen the feature on Telenorba a few weeks ago.

Two of this month’s additions to the Downloadable Worksheets section of the Teachers’ Area of the site are featured in the Roadshow; all three are part of the soundtrack of your students’ 2012.

The first is one of the year’s biggest selling singles – Carly Rae Jepson’s Call Me Maybe. Aude Clech from Paris, France, has prepared a simple gap fill and ordering activity.

Adele is the best selling singer of recent years. The second addition is the wonderful Someone Like You, and looks  at Verbs and Adjectives as Past Participles. This worksheet is a collaboration between Nicoletta Blasutig, Udine and Laura Casolero, Grumo Nevano (NA).

The third worksheet looks at Phrasal Verbs and the Passive form, using a track from Muse’s latest album – Panic Station. This was written by Marilena Adamo, based in Pordenone, who also runs the excellent blog Sing Along With It! Improving your English with the help of up-to-date hits.

Thank you to all teachers who have submitted worksheets – I look forward to receiving your contributions in the future. This month features three first-time contributors!

The Karaoke page of Tune Into English now features over 8,400 songs, including all those featured in this month’s newsletter. You can sing along with the UK Top 10 Charts on the Speak Up site – updated weekly, there is a link on the Tune Home page too.

Why not film your students singing in the classroom? We would be delighted to publish the video!

Don’t forget to tell your students about the Tune Into English Drawing Competition – we have already received some wonderful Beatles drawings, and look forward to receiving more of your students’ (or even your own!) masterpieces! (and not just of the Fab Four!!!)

Once again, Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
