May 2012 – The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

Dear Teacher,

The Olympic Torch arrives in the UK on the 18th of this month, before arriving in London for the opening of the 30th Olympic Games on the 3rd of July. The first addition to the Downloadable Worksheets section of the Teachers’ Area of www.tuneintoenglish.com is, appropriately, Spinnin’ For 2012, the official song of the London 2012 Torch Relay, performed by Dionne Bromfield & Tinchy Stryder. This worksheet was submitted by Simonetta Gatto, Casella (GE), and looks at Olympic facts.

Coldplay return to Italy this month, and the second new worksheet is Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall. Written by Prof. Rosa Maria Conte, Laterza (TA), this looks at prepositions with a variety of activities.

Many of you will be familiar with Roy Boardman’s work, and we are proud to present his worksheet for Walt Disney’s Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf? Aimed at Primary students, this exploits children’s love for sound, rhythm, intonation, and the association of these with actions and pictures to give meaning. You can read more about Roy’s Naples-based Campania ELT here.

The new Italian worksheet on the Tune Into Italian page, written by Caterina Ziliani, based in Houston, Texas, is Le Cose Che Abbiamo In Comune by Daniele Silvestri, focussing on pronouns, numbers and vocabulary.

Teachers at the Scuola Superiore di I° Grado may be interested in Up To You!, ELI’s holiday book, consolidating and revising vocabulary and structures presented during the year. Written by Kavanagh and Morris, you can read more about this here.

With the summer approaching, the Tune Into English T-shirt is an essential addition to your and your students’ wardrobe.  Made of high quality material and featuring the Tune logo, it is available exclusively through this newsletter at a special reduced price for the month of May – click here to avail of this limited offer. All orders come with a free badge!

The Karaoke page of Tune Into English features over 7,800 songs. Don’t forget that you can sing along with the UK Top 10 Charts on the Speak Up site – updated weekly; there is a link on the Tune Home page too.

The Tune Into English Roadshow is in the final month of its tour, thank you to all those who have hosted the show, and to those who have sent in comments and drawings. You can see a large selection of videos and photographs from over five years of the Roadshow on the Tune facebook page, as well as Shakira in Spanish in Ayamonte and Huelva on our youtube channel.

Thank you for the positive feedback I have received for the worksheet for the film Once – you can read more here.

Tune Into English will be in London on the 23rd May for the British Council ELTons award for innovation in Teacher Resources – this prestigious recognition is also thanks to all you who have contributed or used the worksheets and other resources on the website. So thank you!

Good luck with the last month of term!

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
