February 2012 – Once – the Film Worksheet

Dear Teacher,

Love is in the air this month – with St. Valentine’s Day coming up Tune Into English is publishing a 48-page worksheet featuring 22 activities based on the 2007 Irish film Once. A love story with a difference, The Chicago Tribune said it “may well be the best music film of our generation”.

The three additions to this month’s Downloadable Worksheets section of the Teachers’ Area of www.tuneintoenglish.com are also of a romantic nature, and come from three different countries.

The first is, appropriately, the Oscar winning song from the film Once – Mena Bianco of Naples, Italy has written a word formation activity based on Falling Slowly performed by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová. (Last month Mena submitted a worksheet for a Christy Moore song – Christy says hello!)

The second addition is Céline Dion’s Because You Loved Me, a Past Simple activity submitted by Lilian Mierez from Argentina.

Caterina Ziliani, based in Texas, sent in the third new worksheet – Romeo’s Tune by Steve Forbert focuses on rhyming words.

Thank you to all teachers who have submitted worksheets – I look forward to receiving your contributions in the future.

New Team Up in English, the ideal course for the Scuola Secondaria di I° Grado, published by ELI, is now available – click here for more details.

The Tune Into English Roadshow is continuing its tour, thank you to all those who have hosted the show. You can see a large selection of videos and photographs from over four years of the Roadshow on facebook – there is a link on the home page of the Tune Into English website.

The Karaoke page of Tune Into English features over 7,600 songs. Don’t forget that you can sing along with the UK Top 10 Charts on the Speak Up site – updated weekly; there is a link on the Tune Home page too.

Thank you for the response for Tune Into English’s recent competitions – you can see the winning question for David Copley (the voice of Sean Penn) here and the answers to the song lyrics featuring the word ‘five’ here.

Finally, Tune Into English has been long listed for the prestigious 2012 ELTons, presented by the British Council. We’ll keep you posted as to whether we make the shortlist (announced in March) – fingers crossed!!!

A very Happy St. Valentine’s Day!

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
